Photography is something that anyone can do. You don’t have to be a professional or have expert equipment in order to take great pictures. If you have some professional tips and suggestions on how to do it properly, anyone with a camera can take photos that you will be proud to show off.
Digital techniques can give your photographs a unique and interesting appearance. There are a variety of photo editing programs out there, but all the cool kids use Photoshop. With Photoshop, photos can be instantly converted to works of art by simply selecting the effect you desire.
Blur the background of shots with people in them just a little bit. Having a background that is in full focus will take away from your subject, making it harder to direct your viewer’s focus to the right location. Make sure you place the background further away than normal when you are shooting your subject.
Do not try to be unique all the time. You will not lose your status as a good photographer if you take some classic looking shots. Learn to make the difference between what is art and what is not. Do not edit your basic pictures of your friends to make them look artsy.
Consider documenting your souvenirs with photography during your travels. Having the back-story on these things, such as where they were purchased or obtained, brings new depth to the items photographed. This is a great way to capture memories and remember where you might have purchased a certain item from.
Make sure to set up your compositions so that vertical lines are truly vertical. Tilting the camera backwards to capture a tall building, for example, can cause the building to appear as if it is falling backwards out of the frame. Photographs in which buildings are not vertical often appear unnatural.
Take your camera with you as often as you can. You never know when a great opportunity for a photo will present itself. Keep your camera out and ready if you expect to use it – by the time you get your camera out of the bag, get the lens cap off, and adjust your settings, your shot is gone. Hang the camera around your neck. Of course, if you’re in a high-crime area, or if you don’t want it to be obvious that you are a tourist, you may need to be a bit more discreet.
You need to make sure that you have the right white balance setting on your camera if you are taking pictures under fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lights emit blue- or green-tinged light, leaving your subjects looking too cool. The appropriate setting will compensate for the red tones that your lighting environment lacks.
Make sure you take note of natural lighting. Whenever you take photos outdoors, you should try and shoot either early in the morning or later in the evening. When the sun goes high in the sky, there can be undesirable shadows cast and the subject may squint because of the harsh light. Position your subject to they are hit with the sun on their side to get a wonderful looking effect.
Many digital cameras nowadays actually have a setting for red eye reduction. One of the worst things that can happen to a good picture is the subject will have red eye, ruining an otherwise perfect picture. If you have a setting, turn that setting on first, then snap your shot, and presto, no red eye!
Like previously stated, be aware of the setting on your camera and what you have it on for certain subject matter and lighting conditions. Once again, pay special attention to the ISO of your camera. When shooting in low light, increase the ISO on your camera to keep the shot sharp.
Filters that you should consider investing in include; the polarizing filter to decrease the amount of reflections, the colorizing filters for an added richness in different colors, and the IR filter to shoot in the dark. Many filtering effects can now be added after the photo is taken with photo editing software.
Do not trust the appearance of the photo on your camera’s LCD screen. Any picture that you take and look at on a two or three inch screen is going to look sharp. If you are taking a shot that you do not want to take the chance of messing up, zoom in and look closely at every pixel to make sure that it is as you want it to be.
As you can see from the tips that you read here, there are a lot of simple things that anyone can do to take better pictures. Our photos are snapshots in time, memories and people that we want to remember and cherish forever. Get started now with all these great ideas.
